    Description

Woman's huipil measuring 31 inches wide and 27 inches long.
According to the literature (see Threads of Identity by Altman and West), this woman's huipil from Zacualpa could date from any time 1960 to 2010, since the styles have not changed over this 50 year period. Since this examples incorporates a lustrous synthetic yarn for the soumak brocading, this huipil must date post-1990. The fineness of the weave and the brocaded design indicate that traditional weaving techniques are still used in this village in the northern part of Guatemala's southern highlands.
This daily-use huipil was woven on a back-strap loom, as is typical of the huipiles of Zacualpa. The foundation fabric is of red cotton, with narrow stripes of light red, yellow and green cotton threads. The brocading is of a lustrous synthetic yarn, and is of the type called soumak supplemental weft brocading. Zacualpa is the only town in Guatemala which incorporates this decorative technique.
The huipil consists of two panels. Two of the lower edges have been nicely selvage finished, the other tow are hemmed.. The adornment around the head-hole is retained. The side stitching (which made the huipil into a finished garment to be used) is still present
Measurements: approximately 31 inches wide (average) and 27 inches long.
Condition: Excellent condition, some very light dust and soil possible. This is a contemporary huipil in very nice condition.
