    Brazil, Araweté Indian Natural Cotton Skirt, Tribal, Pará, 1992 – 2
    Up for offer is a woman’s skirt, called “tupãy puku” in the Araweté language. I acquired this at a fund raiser for the tribe by CEDI (Ecumenical Center for Documentation and Information) in São Paulo in 1992. At that time, the tribe was in dire straits, with only 204 members. The population of the tribe had risen to
    467
    by 2014. They live in a single village in southern Pará state, located in northern Brazil.
    This skirt is made of cotton, in three bands. The outer bands has a fairly open weave and the center band has a tighter weave. It is tinted with annatto and is approximated 21” / 53cm wide, not counting the fringe and has an approximately 37” / 119cm waist. There are 7 dark blue and black beads attached to one fringe.
