I just purchased this vintage Nicaraguan art pottery vase on stand from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The piece is signed in hand incised script "San Juan de los platos" the name given to the famed potting village San Juan de Oriente. A pottery center since pre-Columbian times, the village today is home to many family run workshops and pottery cooperatives. The vase is also signed by the artist "Gutierrez" (Casta? Santiago? Luis Enrique?). The hand coiled red earthenware form features a striking traditional design deeply cut with fine incised decoration to the remaining burnished gloss exterior. The vase on stand measures 6 ½" high (the vase itself is 5 ½") and 5" in diameter. Both pieces are in excellent condition with no damage. This handsome incised / burnished vase would make a nice addition to your collection of Central American folk art pottery.
