    Description

As you can see from the photos, these candy boxes are really old.  They can be dated by the design of the Tootsie Rolls pictured on the box and the weight of the contents (at least 2 oz.) for a nickel.
I’m not sure what the A B C means in the upper right hand corner.
One of the boxes is in better shape than the other, but they both share the same design.
Because they’re over 80 years old, the cardboard is a bit brittle and there’s dustiness on the surface.   One of the side flaps separated, but I will send that along.  The three other flaps are still connected.
The boxes have the Good Housekeeping Seal in the upper left hand corner.  On one side of the box is the phrase “Chewy Chocolate.”  “Chocolate” was dropped from the advertising early in the Tootsie Roll history.
On one flap is marked “Sweets Company of America,” which moved from New York to Hoboken, NJ, in 1938.
Each box measures 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches and must have held at least five smaller Tootsie Rolls, since the small ones sold for a penny each in the 1930’s and early 40’s.
I’ve seen plenty of Tootsie Roll wrappers from the 50’s and 60’s, and a handful from earlier, but I’ve never seen a box designed for theater candy back in the day…and probably never will.
Because these were store flat, the safest way to ship them will be flattened and placed inside a heavy-duty polypropylene sleeve.
