    Description

    Very exceptional Pin called "
    Tupu"
    worn by Mapuche Women
A Mapuche pin called "Tupu''. Handmade by a Mapuche silvermith in german silver material. Jewel worn by Mapuche women to tie the traditional clothes or for holding up other jewels during ceremonies. The piece shown here has a compact plate composed of graceful rounded edges, some little concise motifs around it made in engraved technique; a couple of little bells hung from the upper edge and a "grain" and a "face" in relief placed in the centre of the plate. These last elements represent symbols of the Mapuche cosmogony, like the human fertility (grain) and the image of a good god called "pillán" ( face). The subtle tinkling from the little bells with the rhythm of the Mapuche woman´s walk confers the sweet and deep invocation to the good or benefactors' spirits. More details: Piece in very good condition. With a nice and soft natural patina, according to its use and the course of the time.
    CIRCA 1950
    Measure: 25 x 10 cm (length x width).
