    Description

Vintage Mountain Aymara Traditional Aguayo style Woven Textile Poncho purchased in the Brujas Market in La Paz, Bolivia in 2001.
Item is hand-woven and over thirty five years old. Beautiful example of vegetable and other natural dyes. Color is gorgeous on a shelf or turned into textile art.   I display it on a ladder next to a painting of an aguayo I bought in Bolivia from a local artist.
    SIZE: 46 inches x 38 inches
    MATERIAL: Alpaca and llama wool
    CULTURE: Andean (Quechua and Aymara)
    ORIGIN: La Paz Bolivia
COLORS: Red, burgundy, pinks and natural white, blue and black.
Purchased in the Mercado de las Brujas (Witches Market) in 2001.
The aguayo - possibly from awayu, Aymara for diaper and for a woven blanket to carry things on the back or to cover the back or also quepina (possibly from Quechua q'ipi bundle)is a rectangular carrying cloth used in traditional communities in the Andes region of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.Aymara and Quechua people use it to carry small children or various other items in it on their backs. This particular textile is a larger weave. Different from others I am offering. Very colorful.
PACHAMAMA.- Pachamama (Mother Earth) in Quechua is the central all - surrounding motif of the Andean path. The religion of the Andean communities is very much an earth-centered religion. Pachamama is believed to be a vastly intelligent, self-aware being who is both infinitely wise and infinitely compassionate. Andeans in general, and paq'os in particular pray to her regularly.
DESPACHO - HAYWARISQ'A.- Is the Quechua word for an offering. A despacho is an act of love and a reminder of the connections we share with all beings, elements, spirits, and sacred places. It is an opportunity to enter into the essential unity of all things. A despacho is created during a celebratory ceremony, in the cosmology.
This is from a smoke and pet free home.
Condition is "Used". Please see photos for marks as this is an old textile.
