Jordan proposes emergency Arab League meeting in response to Israeli ban on UNRWA

AMMAN, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — Jordan on Tuesday called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League to discuss a unified Arab response to Israel’s decision to ban the operations of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees within the area under its control.
The meeting aims to discuss the necessary steps for a unified Arab stance rejecting the Israeli parliament’s legislation banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and mobilize international support to counter the decision, according to the state-run Petra news agency.
Sufian Qudah, spokesperson for Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said Jordan’s ambassador in Cairo and its permanent representative to the Arab League have been directed to contact the Arab League’s secretariat to convene this emergency meeting.
Qudah emphasized that the proposal is part of a series of measures and communications undertaken by Jordan in coordination with Arab countries to confront the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
The Israeli parliament, the Knesset, on Monday passed a law banning UNRWA operations, despite opposition from the United States and several European countries. ■
